Cebu Philippines Island Tour: Hilutungan Island
Hilutungan Island, also called Gilutungan Island, Hilotongan Island, or Lutungan Island, lies less than 30 minutes from Mactan Island by bangka boat. From our Scotty's Dive Center Headquarters at Shangri-la Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City, Hilutungan Island is only 11 kilometers (7 nautical miles) away, heading 199° on the compass.
The best place to snorkel Hilutungan Island is on its western shore, which has white sand. There is more white sand on its northern sea shore. On its eastern sea shore you will find sea corals at shallow depths.
Carrageenan, made from seaweed and made in Cebu, is in many food products. Local seaweed farmers earn money exporting seaweed from Hilutungan Island to Cebu.
Snorkeling Hilutungan Marine Sanctuary
Hilutungan Island's reef top is shallow, starting at only 2 meters (6 feet) deep. You can go snorkeling in calm water currents at that depth. You may also opt to go swimming along the sandbar.
Bring your underwater camera, because the water is crystal clear. The high visibility will allow you to capture picturesque corals and coral fishes.
Also bring bread, because you can go snorkeling and feed fishes at the same time!
Your Hilutungan Island Excursion
This tropical island is home to diverse aquatic life, including:
- clown fish (sea anemone, anemone fish)
- crayfish (crawfish, crawdad)
- jackfish (jack, northern pike)
- sea urchin
Fresh crayfish and fresh tropical fishes are on the menu at Hilutungan Island. One delicacy is sea urchin gonads, which you can buy by the bottle. Be adventurous and try some!
