Trimix Diving is the next step in technical diving. It carries with it some additional risks and, just like technical diving in general, is not necessarily for everyone. Trimix diving involves the addition of helium into a diver's breathing mix to both reduce the effects of nitrogen narcosis, and more importantly, do prevent the potential of a toxic oxygen event. The relatively fast diffusion and perfusion rates of helium require extra control precision during decompression stops. At Scotty's here in Cebu, we offer technical diving courses both preceding and succeeding Trimix, but your Trimix Diver Course will be a vital part of your development as a technical diver.
DSAT Technical Trimix Diver Course
The DSAT Technical Trimix Diver Course is the worlds most popular training program down to 75m. As you learned in your technical deep diver course, diving on air much deeper than 50m poses unacceptable risks related to both nitrogen and helium. That makes it necessary to dilute the mixture with another gas. The inert qualities of helium make it the perfect gas. During this course, just as in the DSAT TecDeep course, there are many theory sessions which teach you the knowledge needed to safely conduct Trimix dives. A renewed emphasis on technical diving skills will help you sharpen and keep sharp your in-water tec skills. The course starts with a few air and nitrox dives just to make sure you are ready for decompression diving with helium-based mixes. As part of the DSAT Technical Trimix Diver Courses, eight open water dives must be completed. The last four of these are actual decompression dives which will allow you to apply your technical diving skills in a real-life decompression situation. This DSAT Technical Diving Course (TecDeep) is the most popular technical diving program in the world. The typical course takes 10-12 days, depending on diver performance and number of candidates.
IANTD Trimix Diver
The IANTD Trimix Diver course is endorsed by the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers. Like their technical diving courses, the DSAT and IANTD Trimix courses are similar, but have some differences. Again, the main differences occur in the structure, requirements, materials for each Trimix course. It follows that the resulting certifications are equivalently-regarded by dive shops and other certification entities. Our students usually choose to cross-qualify when taking their Trimix courses in order to upgrade their rating with the respective trimix training agency.
