The last step on your way to becoming a PADI Instructor. The PADI Instructor Exam (IE) is scheduled to begin after your IDC finishes, providing time for final remediation training or a few days to relax and prepare.
Time to cut the umbilical cord from your Course Drector. The two day IE is organized, ran and staffed exclusively by PADI. We will be there in the background providing moral support and organizing the logistics and equipment. PADI will take care of everything else.
Nearly all of our IE’s are at a local venue in Cebu chosen by PADI, that being the case we will take you there on the day. Occasionally the IE will be held at a location other than Cebu city, such as Malapascua. In this case we will advise on travel arrangements. You may check which IE’s are being held where here, but don’t worry, our staff will make sure you are fully aware of all locations and logistics before your course begins, no last minute surprises.
In the morning the IE starts with a meet and greet session with your examiner, who will settle your nerves and explain the scheduling and IE process. At any IE there are typically several students from various IDC centers, you will be placed into small groups for the remainder of the IE, the other students in your group will role play your students and assistants during exercises.
The IE is made up of four assessment areas, written exams covering PADI Standards and Dive theory, Confined water teaching presentations, Open water teaching presentations including your rescue assessment and finally your Knowledge development teaching presentations.
The Standards exam is open book and demonstrates your ability to correctly make use of instructor materials, dive theory covers topics familiar from your divemaster course. The exams do have a time limit, however if properly prepared you will find this quite generous.
Your confined water presentation requires you to brief a skill to a group of students, make use of an assistant, demonstrate the skill and have the students meet the performance requirement by completing the skill. If there are any problems with their performance you will need to identify and correct these before debriefing your students at the surface.
Your open water teaching presentations are structured almost identically to the confined water presentations. Open water provides more challenges to the instructor with added factors such as student control and environmental considerations. You will also be using integrated teaching, that is to say you will be teaching a skill from two different courses on the same dive. Back at the surface your rescue assessment begins, you will be asked to perform a demonstration quality rescue on an unresponsive diver at the surface, you’ll be told on the day if it is mouth to mouth or by pocket mask so we’ll make sure you are proficient with both.
Your knowledge development teaching presentations require you to provide remedial training to a group of students, focusing on one topic, or incorrect question, from one of the PADI courses. You will use PADI materials such as student or instructor manuals along with PADI PowerPoint slides to explain your topic.
That’s it, once the IE is successfully completed you will be handed a certificate, be aware that there is a processing time of around 10 days before you can start teaching, once done you will be notified of your teaching status and you can begin your dream job. After all the hard work you will be ready for the final part of the IDC, the graduation party.
