Scotty’s Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a ten day program consisting of two courses, the PADI Assistant Instructor and the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor program, taught consecutively. Assistant instructors need only attend the second part of the program whilst Divemasters will attend the full program.
During the course you will be taught to present confined and open water skills to students, identify problems and encourage proper technique. In the classroom you will learn how to present the PADI curriculum and system of education to student divers. There will be two rounds of mock exams, the first highlighting learning objectives and the second ensuring mastery with plenty of remediation from your Course Director inbetween the two. These exams cover the same subjects you will be tested on during your Instructor exam (IE) and topics that pop up in all the courses you will be teaching during your career, we will make sure you are 100% comfortable with these.
You will attend several presentations starting with the course orientation, Learning, Instruction and the PADI System, General Standards and Procedures, Developing Knowledge Development Presentations, Risk Management and more.
After a Rescue workshop you will hop in the water and demonstrate your rescue skills, during your IE you will be asked to repeat this exercise, with either a pocket mask or using mouth to mouth, so we will make sure you a proficient with both. We will also ask you to complete an 800 meter swim using your mask, fins and snorkel.
Whilst your dive and rescue skills should be demonstration quality from your divemaster training, we understand that some candidates require a refresher after a long gap or to ease any performance related concerns you may have. If required please contact us to arrange a pre IDC workshop before your program begins for some one on one training with your Course Director.
In addition to the basic curriculum we add several topics and workshops to better prepare you for life as a PADI instructor including advanced dive planning, knot and rope work, Intro to Tec diving and more.
Typically we will schedule the Emergency First Response Instructor Course somewhere in the IDC, but if need be this can be completed after both the IDC and IE.
Your IDC will be conducted in our 5 star resort setting with purpose built classrooms, luxurious swimming pool and the open water training takes place in the Shangri La Marine Sanctuary, a marine protected area boasting impressive amounts of marine life, shipwrecks and great visibility year round.
